Opeyemi Bamidele: A state police bill needs to address concerns about government abuse.

Date:

The measure aiming to create the state police, according to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, needs to address worries about gubernatorial abuse.

According to Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Nigeria is not ‘mature’ sufficient to satisfy state police, as he said in April.
Still, Bamidele stated that the state police system needs to be held to internationally recognized standards by the legislative framework.

The plan needs to be approved by at least two thirds of state parliaments in order for it to can grow to be productive,’ stated the majority leader.

To put it simply, the legal framework needs to be clear, open, and actionable in order to alleviate public concerns over the state police.

It must persuadingly tackle difficult problems that may in the future, lead governors to utilize state police arbitrarily.

It is important to distinguish between establishing a legal framework and actually putting it into practice once it is approved. The operationalization of state police inside the borders of each subnational government is free to occur on its own schedule.

According to the senator from Ekiti, state governments ought to have the freedom to choose when to set up their own law enforcement agencies.
‘Every state can proceed with it immediately as long as they are ready for its operationalization;’ He stated.

The creation of the legal framework will stop subnational governments from arming citizens in violation of the constitution by hiding behind vigilante groups. But, in order for all sub-national governments to adhere to established guidelines and practices in an effort to safeguard people’s lives and safeguard communal property, we must thoroughly lay out the legislative framework for state police establishment.
