In the most recent election, Atiku ran as the PDP’s presidential candidate. Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress defeated both Obi and Atiku in the election (APC).
The former vice president recently stated in an interview with BBC Hausa Service that he (Atiku) would be happy to lend his support if his party, the PDP, determined that 2027 was the southeast’s turn and chose Obi as its candidate.
According to Mr. Akin Osuntokun, the former Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Obi’s return to the PDP would depend on the situation. Given his strong showing in the previous general elections, He wouldn’t have been able to accept the PDP unless the party granted him the presidential ticket.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku declared that he would back any candidate selected to lead the PDP in 2027, regardless of whether they were from the southeast.
But in an interview with NoireTV over the weekend, Obi emphasized that the goal of a merger like this should not be limited to gaining state control or winning elections, but should instead be focused on strengthening governance and helping the underprivileged.

Regarding the matter of a merger and the joining of parties, I have consistently declared that I support mergers and alliances if they improve Nigeria and promote good governance.
“I oppose the merger if its sole purpose is to capture state power or win an election. We have a lot of potential, and while I am not desperate to become president, I am desperate to see Nigeria succeed, especially for the underprivileged.
‘Therefore, I support the merger if it will enable proper governance of Nigeria on all those issues that will improve Nigeria.’I support the merger if it will enable Nigeria to be effectively governed and pursue all the goals that will improve Nigeria.
