Date:

Opening arguments in the trial of Hunter Biden in the federal firearms case will take place on Tuesday after the jury was seated on Monday.

The big picture: If found guilty of three felonies related to firearms, President Biden’s son could receive a maximum sentence of 25 years in jail.

Making headlines: In a single day, twelve jurors and four alternates were chosen.

Six men and six women make up this group, and most of them are black.
First Lady Jill Biden was present at the court in Wilmington, Delaware’s legislature, on Monday, in addition to his sister Ashley, wife Melissa, and son-in-law Peter Neal of Hunter.

Enlarge: The majority of prospective jurors and the chosen jury informed the court that they knew someone who had battled alcohol or drug addiction; these people were frequently family members.

Biden’s defense team hinted that they would contend that Hunter had a drug addiction but thought he was in recovery when he purchased the firearm during their interviews with prospective jurors.

An FBI special agent who handled Biden’s case will be the prosecution’s first witness.
Quick catch-up: In September of last year, Biden was charged by Special Counsel David Weiss with offenses relating to making false statements on a document when he bought a gun in 2018. Prosecutors claim he was in possession of while under the influence.

Before Biden was charged, his attorneys tried to reach a plea agreement, but the talks broke down.

For all charges, Biden has entered a not guilty plea.
It’s important to note that Biden will also be facing a more difficult trial in September in California related to federal tax allegations.
