After defeating Scottish team Rangers 2-0 in a preseason friendly, Manchester United welcomed back Jadon Sancho and had a positive first look at new acquisition Leny Yoro. It was a fantastic afternoon for Erik ten Hag and the Red Devils.
While Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Brentford, and West Ham all triumphed on Saturday, United’s goals came from Amad Diallo and Joe Hugill.
Jadon Sancho returned to Manchester United action in a 2-0 preseason friendly win over Rangers in Scotland, while just two days after joining the team, new addition Leny Yoro made an impression.
Sancho joined Borussia Dortmund on loan for the second half of the season after a falling out with Erik ten Hag the previous season, and he assisted the German team advance to the final of the UEFA Champions League.
But after the two had ‘positive’ discussions during the summer, it appears that any past disagreements between Sancho and Ten Hag have been resolved.
After such a tumultuous season the previous year, Ten Hag was happy with how his club performed as ‘a team’ and was satisfied with how United recovered from Monday’s loss to beat Rangers.
‘After Saturday’s victory, I was very disappointed on Monday, especially with the performance, which is even more important in pre-season,’ Ten Hag stated. ‘I want to win every game.’
‘You want to develop, and today’s events have demonstrated that. We were in the lead and it was lot better in terms of aggression. We performed as a unit in both halves.’
In the match, Ten Hag alluded to a major role for the Ivorian this season by declaring that this ‘has to be the year’ for the 22-year-old Amad Diallo, who scored for United against his old team.
‘We need to view Amad differently,’ the manager of Manchester United stated.
‘He may be young, but he no longer lacks experience. Last year, he struggled with injuries but went on to have a great loan in the Championship.
‘And he enjoyed a great experience in our first team towards the close of the previous season. This year needs to be it.’
Sancho was quickly reintegrated into the group by the Dutchman, as he began and completed the full ninety minutes of play in United’s second preseason match against the 55-time Scottish champions.
Ten Hag brought in some more seasoned players at Murrayfield after his team’s inexperienced lineup was defeated by Rosenborg earlier in the week.
Yoro made his United debut after a £52 million deal, and Andre Onana, Amad Diallo, and Sancho all started.
Red Devils supporters welcomed their first look at Yoro after a Premier League season in which United let in 58 goals.
Yoro looked completely at home in his 45 minutes of action, slotting into the defense alongside Jonny Evans.
Early on, he produced a superb last-ditch block to prevent striker Cyriel Dessers from having an open run to the goal within the a one-on-one scenario during the first ten minutes.
With the ball at his feet, the youthful center-back consistently created attacks from the back, finishing 92% of his passes.
Just before halftime, Mason Mount and Diallo’s stunning finish snapped the tie for The Red Devils.
After dribbling into the penalty area, he cut inside onto his left foot from the right, then curled a shot across goal and in at the far post.
After halftime, a wave of youth was inserted, and 20-year-old Joe Hugill immediately increased United’s advantage with a powerful effort after he latches onto a deft through ball from adolescent Maxi Oyedele.
