Breaking: Ahmed Abubakar, My Reason for Resigning as NIA DG

It was former President Muhammadu Buhari who originally nominated him as the DG of the NIA in 2018. Buhari continued to serve in that capacity until December 2021.

President Bola Tinubu received a letter of resignation from National Intelligence Agency Director General Ahmed Abubakar on Saturday at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

The former NIA chief cited personal and family difficulties as his reasons for leaving from office when briefing reporters at the State House following his meeting with President Tinubu.

Many factors can lead someone to act in that way. He remarked, ‘There are a few family matters that are personal, but nothing too serious. The friendship will go on.’

‘I talked to Mr. President, and he was quite understanding of it. I also pledged to stick to the problems and the security conditions.’ around the nation.’

He also thanked the President, who he had served as the head of state since 2018, for letting him hold the position for the first fifteen months of the current administration.

‘I submitted my resignation following the briefing, and Mr. President kindly accepted and approved it.

Abubakar stated, ‘I thanked him for giving me the chance to serve Nigeria under his transformational leadership for an extended period of 15 months, which is very rare.’

He visited the President for a customary briefing at the Villa and then tendered his resignation to Abubakar.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari first named him as the DG of the NIA in 2018, and he was given an extension to serve as such until December 2021.

Katsina State native Abubakar, 71, a retired career foreign service officer, joined the Nigerian Foreign Service Security Department in 1993.

He was named the president’s senior special assistant (SSAP) for foreign policy and international relations in 2015.

He studied at Bayero University in Kano, where he earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in French. Along with English, he speaks Arabic language.
