Andrew Emwanta, a former Edo State commissioner for information, claims that Governor Godwin Obaseki picked Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, a Labour Party chieftain, as his deputy because of his connection with the opposition party.

The former commissioner further claimed that Obaseki is secretly supporting the Labour Party’s candidate for the state’s gubernatorial race, Olumude Akpata, in the event that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, fails to field a candidate due to an internal conflict inside the party.
According to the VIZTA DAILY, following the impeachment of former deputy governor Philip Shaibu, Obaseki named Omobayo, 38, as his new deputy on Monday.
Omobayo was the LP’s candidate for the Akoko Edo Federal Constituency in the State’s 2023 general election.
Emwanta, who appeared on the Arise TV program on Monday night, questioned why Obaseki did not appoint a PDP member as his deputy.
He stated, “This same speaker, the deputy governor, paid for his nomination form.” We were in court to prevent them from being booted out as PDP candidates.
The governor would not clear any roads; he supported a Labour Party member. The individual that was sworn in today was a Labour Party candidate in the previous election.
It is unfortunate that the governor did not even invite members of his own party on board. If someone should succeed Shaibu, it should be a PDP member, not a Labour Party member.
“The guy sworn in did not deny that he was the LP candidate who ran on that platform.
“The governor also gave me a Labour Party ticket. He is a member of the PDP during the day and the Labour Party at night.
“This appointment confirms Obaseki’s romantic relationship with the Labour Party. He was eager to put in a Labour Party representative so that if the PDP does not have a candidate, he can back his cousin, the LP candidate.”
