FG Designates Boards and Governing Councils for ”Tertiary Institutions”

The FG Designates Boards and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other stakeholders objected to the Federal Government’s distribution of the reconfigured governing councils’ membership list a few weeks ago, citing perceived lopsidedness.

The governing councils and boards of the 111 federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education have been reorganized by the federal government.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other stakeholders objected to the Federal Government’s distribution of the reconfigured governing councils’ membership list a few weeks ago, citing perceived lopsidedness. The list was withdrawn for review as a result of this.

However, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Commonwealth of Nations (OSGF) issued an additional announcement on Friday with the names of the governing council members on it.

‘For the efficient administration of Nigerian tertiary institutions throughout the nation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the governing councils and boards of federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education,’ the statement read.

The list states that Chief Bisi Akande, a pioneering chairman of the All Progressives Congress and a former governor of Osun State, was selected by the Nigerian government to chair the Governing, Council of the University of Ibadan (UI), located in Oyo State.

In addition, prominent attorney and Senior Advocate of Nigeria Wole Olanipekun (UNILAG), former Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda (NOUN), and former Secretary to the Government of the the International Federation Yayale comprised the list of candidates to lead the executive and legislative councils Ahmed is a student at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.

At the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri, Imo State, Senator Joy Emordi was also named to chair the council. For 51 universities, 35 polytechnics, and 22 institutions of education, there are five names on the list each.
