The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede has assured that Nigeria will be peaceful if he is confirmed by the National Assembly. He made this commitment during his appearance before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Defence and Army, which took place at the National Assembly Complex on Wednesday.
Lt. Gen. Oluyede was appointed temporarily after the passing of Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of collaboration with neighboring countries to tackle security issues and create safer environments.
He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to improving the nation’s safety. He explained that he is here to be confirmed as the 24th Chief of Army Staff following the loss of Gen. Lagbaja, who had been ill before his death.
Lt. Gen. Oluyede noted that he had previously been appointed by President Bola Tinubu to act in Lagbaja’s place during his recovery.
Reflecting on his military career, Oluyede shared that he has served in the Nigerian Army for over 30 years, gaining insights into national security at various levels.
He has been involved in managing the Army for the last five years and feels responsible for its recent achievements and challenges. He views his nomination as a chance to lead the Army effectively and fulfill its duties.
He pledged to prove himself worthy of the trust given to him by the President and the National Assembly if confirmed. To address insecurity better, he stated that the Army needs more aircraft for its operations.
Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, pointed out that Nigeria has the resources to tackle its security challenges. He stressed the need for innovative strategies to confront modern threats, which now go beyond traditional combat scenarios.
Benson assured that the House would continue to support the armed forces with appropriate legal frameworks and funding to improve their effectiveness. He urged Oluyede to focus on professionalism and prioritize the well-being of the troops, highlighting the significant responsibility that comes with this role.
