Kenneth Okonkwo has departed from the Labour Party and Peter Obi.

Date:

Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent Nigerian actor and politician, has announced his resignation from the Labour Party and has decided to sever ties with Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate.

This move could have implications for both Okonkwo’s political career and the Labour Party as they navigate the political landscape.

Political links between the Labour Party and its 2023 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, have been cut by former spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo for the party.

On July 27, 2024, Okonkwo, a lawyer and renowned Nollywood actor, took the decision in reaction to ‘the candidate’s inability to address growing internal issues between himself and the Labour Party’.

The statement made by Okonkwo was shared on social media.

Okonkwo claimed he was no longer confident that Obi could win the next general elections and unite the party.

He scolded Obi for not using his authority to address the party’s enduring issues following the 2023 elections.

Okonkwo came to the conclusion that Obi had not been able to establish a solid foundation that would allow him to challenge the verdict All the Progressives Congress (APC) during the elections of 2027.

‘I am determined to take a different path in my political career as a result of what is occurring in the Labour Party right now.

Like myself, many Nigerians had great expectations for the Labour Party during the general election of 2023.

I thought Peter Obi would take the initiative and establish a strong, morally-based party that would provide us with the necessary support to topple these kleptocrats and kakistocrats. He only needed to issue the appropriate instructions, and everyone would comply.

The first thing that shocked me was when he openly stated that he had promised Nigerians not only the solution to their issues but also the creation of a powerful Labour Party.

I thought, Does that imply that Peter Obi is HE? Not conscious of the fact that we are going nowhere in politics without a strong party foundation?

To no use, he said, ‘I continued to defend him nonetheless, thinking he would still privately bring the needed solution to LP problems.’

The speaker went on, ‘Peter Obi also openly urged that the National Working Committee,

chaired by Abure, organize an inclusive convention that will ensure that every Labour Party member has a say in choosing their leaders.

Surprisingly, Peter Obi refused to distance himself from the mischievous and illegal actions of the erstwhile NWC even after their time had run out.

This didn’t happen.

Because Peter Obi hasn’t shown any leadership over the party, every Labour Party member is uncertain about the party’s future.

Sadly, I have nothing to offer them because I don’t understand myself while they look to me to inform them about Peter Obi’s point of view.

I am unable to carry on speaking for a leader whose position on matters of significant importance I am ignorant of. I really don’t know how to bend the truth.

‘I find it shocking that Peter Obi was unable to publicly acknowledge the admirable efforts of the labor unions that formed the Labour Party as a foundation to fight for worker welfare,

to the point that some of them have publicly declared that Peter Obi is now Labour Party problem.

Currently, the unpleasant scenario facing labor unions is that they are battling criminals who want to take over their party when an A simple declaration from the PO would have provided the answer.

I can’t carry on feeling this way forever. Naturally, I fully support the labor unions and other interested parties who are now obliged to defend Labour Party’s integrity without Peter Obi’s backing.

But the result is that I am no longer certain that Peter Obi can create a party that can defeat these kleptocrats and kakistocrats;

moreover, he has demonstrated that he lacks the necessary skills to obtain the mandate even in the event that he receives the support of the electorate.

I don’t plan to run a campaign like we did in 2023, portraying a candidate who, even in triumph, cannot maintain the victory.

For this reason, I have made the decision to carry on with my political career without Peter Obi, striving to build the great Nigeria of our dreams.

The comment partially attributed to Okonkwo said, ‘I am always 100% loyal to a leader whenever I am.’
