Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, has urged African leaders to reconsider the democracy that was brought over from the West.
This was said by Obasanjo during a summit on the state of democracy in Africa on Wednesday at the Yar’adua Center in Abuja.
According to him, Africa has to create a democratic model that upholds the continent’s cultural traditions and prioritizes the wellbeing of its citizens.
A democracy that benefits all Africans was promoted by the previous president of Nigeria.
Additionally, he exhorted African leaders to demonstrate an unwavering dedication to the welfare of the populace.
According to Obasanjo, for democracy in Nigeria and throughout Africa to be successful, it ought to be based on the ideas of sound governance, robust institutions, and the rule of law.
According to his definition of democracy, it is a form of government established by popular consent, based on a clear popular mandate, free from corruption, and aimed at promoting the general good.
With funding from Trust Africa and the Ford Foundation, the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Foundation are organizing the summit.
The successes, difficulties, and dangers to African democracy were the main topics of discussion throughout the summit.
