According to Vizta Daily Sports Extra, Tunde Onakoya, the new Guinness World Record holder for the longest unbeaten chess marathon, has acknowledged that he contracted food poisoning during his historic chess marathon run.

Onakoya set off at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17 in Times Square, New York, with the goal of breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest unbroken chess marathon. The 58-hour journey ended at approximately 12:40 a.m. (04:40 GMT) on Saturday.

With the record attempt, the Nigerian chess master hoped to raise $1 million for children’s education throughout Africa.

He had planned to play the royal game for 58 hours, but at approximately 12:40 am (04:40 GMT) on Saturday, he exceeded the previous record by playing for 60 hours. The Norwegians Hallvard Haug Flatebo and Sjur Ferkingstad set a record in 2018 with a duration of 56 hours, nine minutes, and 37 seconds.

He played the royal game for an additional hour and a half after setting out for 58 hours. at roughly 12:40 a.m. (04:40 GMT) on Saturday, beating the previous record held by Norwegians Hallvard Haug Flatebo and Sjur Ferkingstad in 2018 for 56 hours, nine minutes, and 37 seconds.
The 29-year-old claimed in a post on his X handle that he was unable to eat due to food poisoning.

Asukoya is widely recognized in Nigeria, where in 2018 he started the Chess in Slums initiative in Ikorodu, a neighborhood outside of Lagos.

The organization provides a chess learning environment for marginalized youth, many of whom labor to support their families and are not enrolled in school.
