Police officials have asked for the demonstrators’ personal information ahead of the August 1 nationwide protest.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, particularly requested that all organizations scheduled to take part in the Protests to turn up their information to the state police commissioners.

His explanation was that it was a nonviolent protest.

‘We recognize that peaceful assembly and protest are constitutional rights of Nigerian citizens,’ the head of police declared.

In the interest of maintaining public safety and order, we do, however, strongly advise any groups organizing protests to send the relevant information to the state’s commissioner of police.

Could they kindly supply the following details to help ensure a peaceful and successful protest?

These include the names and contact details of the protest leaders and organizers, the anticipated duration of the protest, and the suggested protest routes and assembly places.

Further, the Inspector General stated that the data anticipated from the coordinators also contains safeguards against criminals taking advantage of it and important indicators that may be used to isolate possible troublemakers.

The IGP stated that the police authorities required the information in order to identify possible troublemakers, since they were concerned that criminal elements would use the protest.

In order to prevent conflicts with other events or activities, he stated that the Force must be aware of the precise routes and locations for the demonstration.

He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to allocating sufficient manpower and resources to maintain public safety.

The demonstrators were also given additional instructions by the IGP, which included the following:

‘create clear lines of communication with protest leaders to address any concerns or issues that may arise;’

reduce the possibility of criminal behavior, violence, and the destruction of property.

‘To ensure a safe and effective exercise of their rights, we encourage all protestors to cooperate with the police,

obey the law, and abide by international best practices for peaceful assembly.’

Not a Single Love For Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu commented on the planned nationwide protests on Thursday, claiming that those who are funding them do not love their nation.

He claimed that individuals supporting the protests have alternate passports and attend meetings almost anywhere in the world, but he did not name the sponsor.

‘Protest organizers do not cherish our nation. They are indifferent to the country. Citizenship is beyond their comprehension.

Speaking to a group of Islamic leaders headed by Sheikh Bala Lau in the Presidential Villa, Tinubu stated, ‘They have other passports.’

‘They are holding virtual meetings while located in various parts of the world. Our goal is not to make Nigeria become Sudan.

Not funerals, but starvation is the topic at hand. We need to exercise caution. When it comes to politics of hate and rage, we should exercise caution.

‘Holding meetings in simulated environments is now feasible thanks to the internet. In a statement, the President’s spokesperson,

Ajuri Ngelale, cited the President as saying, ‘They hold meetings and sponsor anger.’

President Tinubu contended that demonstrations fueled by resentment and hatred have the potential to turn violent and take the nation backward.

Change of Regime
