On Wednesday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said that violence has “absolutely no place in football.”

“Such incidents, which were seen at the Maracanã stadium during Argentina’s World Cup qualifying match against Brazil, are nonexistent.”
Minute sixty-three saw the Seleção’s history change as defender Nicolas Otamendi’s strong header awarded Argentina a historic three points in minute sixty-three, sending Brazil reeling from their third consecutive loss in the qualifying round.

Sadly, there was disturbance among the spectators throughout the game, which resulted in the World Cup qualifier starting later than scheduled. When violence broke out between the two groups of fans seated together at one end of the stadium during the national anthems, Brazilian police intervened to quell the rioting battle, but their rough treatment of the Argentine fans enraged Lionel Messi and the other players.

The Inter Miami forward took his teammates to the stand where the fight was taking place at first, and he pleaded with the police and Argentina fans—some of whom were seen throwing torn-out chairs at the security officers—to keep calm.

Some pictures show children sobbing in the bleachers, and another shows a mother trying to go over the seats and away from the violence while carrying a newborn.

In a breathtaking moment, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez climbed up onto the stand and twisted the arm of a policeman to prevent him from beating an Argentina fan with his baton.
Following that, Messi led the squad from the field, returning for the next ten minutes to the dressing rooms. The game ultimately began thirty minutes late.

On its website, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced that mixed fan bases for matches between the world soccer governing body FIFA and South American football’s CONMEBOL are “standard.”

It said, “The CBF did not create or impose this model.” The CBF claims that 1,050 private security guards and 700 military police officers “worked to secure the match.”

“Thus, the CBF restates that all authorities, including the police, complied with the RJ Military-approved action, security, and operating plan for the match.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Wednesday that violence has “absolutely no place in football.”

“Such events, as witnessed during Brazil and Argentina’s World Cup qualifier at the Maracanã stadium, have no place in our sport or society,” said the statement.

“Everyone, including players, fans, employees, and officials, must be safe and secure in order to enjoy and play football. I demand that this be upheld at all times by the pertinent authorities.”

The Brazilian state military police issued a statement claiming that one of the eight people taken into custody was a lady who had allegedly mistreated a Maracanã employee due to her race. The police added that their officers were “involved in a scuffle among fans”.

CNN received no response from CONMEBOL or the Argentina Federation’s football team for an immediate response.

“The truth is that this group continues to achieve historic things once again,” Messi told reporters following the game, according to Reuters. Naturally, things didn’t go well at first, as it was evident that they were mistreating victims.

“We don’t worry as much about winning a game as we do about the family and the individuals in attendance who don’t know what is going on. The competition was not as important at that point.I think this game win is one of the most important ones this team has had since then. It is really wonderful to prevail here in Brazil, given how formidable they have always been at home.

A Towards the conclusion of the evening, a further unexpected occurrence prompted concerns regarding future plans for Argentina’s national team coach, Lionel Scaloni.

Reporters were informed by Scaolini that “I need to think a lot about what I’m going to do.” “I need some time to reflect because the expectations are very high, but it’s not goodbye or anything.” Moving forward is challenging.

“It is hard work to keep winning when you are around these people. I’ll let the president and the players know this time that it’s time to take stock. It takes an endlessly enthusiastic coach to lead this team.

Because of the win, Argentina keeps up their lead in World Cup qualification, whereas Brazil, who most recently won the Copa America, is currently mired in sixth position and has lost their previous four games under temporary head coach Fernando Diniz Fluminense and Libertadores.
There are eighteen rounds in the South American World Cup qualification process. While the seventh-placed country competes in the FIFA play-offs, which also involve six teams from other continents, the top six nations progress to the 2026 competition.
