Stakeholders object to the minister setting JAMB entrance age at 18

Date:

Stakeholders, including concerned parents, educators, and members of the community, have expressed strong opposition to the recent decision made by the minister, regarding the setting of the minimum age requirement for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) entrance examination at 18 years old.

This contentious issue has sparked widespread debate and raised significant concerns among various groups who believe that this decision may have far-reaching implications for students’ educational opportunities and future prospects.

The resistance to this policy change underscores the deep-seated apprehensions within the stakeholder community,

highlighting the need for further dialogue and reassessment of the implications of such a mandate on the youth seeking to pursue higher education through the JAMB system.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced that only applicants who have reached the age of 18 will be admitted into tertiary institutions in the nation going forward.

This has prompted stakeholders and attendees of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, or JAMB, policy meeting to demonstrate.

There were vocal protests from attendees against Mamman, who was restating his previous stance that applicants under the age of 18 were to blame for problems at the country’s colleges.

Everyone in the crowd started yelling ”’No, no, no”’ in loud protest as soon as the minister made, the announcement at the event held in the Body of Benchers’ auditorium in Abuja.

Despite the objection, the clergyman stated that the choice had already become federal government policy, he refused to change his mind.

He said that some of the main issues that tertiary institutions, particularly universities, are confronting, were intended to be addressed by the action.
