On Thursday, the recently promoted Serie A team Como announced that they had recruited former Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina to a one-year contract.

In a statement, the team declared, ‘Como 1907 is happy to announce the signing of Pepe Reina until June 2025.’

The 41-year-old, who has played for some of the top teams in Europe, such as Barcelona, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich, will serve as Pau Lopez’s backup goalkeeper when he arrives from Marseille.

After being released by La Liga team Villarreal Reina is back in Italy.

In his first of two stints at Napoli, he won the 2014 Italian Cup. He has previously played for AC Milan and Lazio.

Reina has 36 caps for her country and was a member of the World Cup and two European championships, winning squad title matches from 2008 to 2012.

The aspirational Como club, who begin their first Premier League campaign in twenty-one years on August 19 at Juventus, welcomes him to the team alongside former La Roja colleague Cesc Fabregas.

The Italian international attacker Andrea Belotti is one of five players that Como has brought in this summer. They are also pursuing former France defender Raphael Varane.

Como, who was bought in 2019 after going through several bankruptcy, has risen through the ranks, supported by tobacco behemoths Djarum.

Its opulent setting on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy has helped the club cultivate a glamorous image.

In a statement, Como said the player in question ‘did not say anything in a derogatory manner’ and that ‘the reaction of certain Wolves players has seen the incident blown out of proportion.’ This assertion drew harsh criticism from the public.
