The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State was prohibited from conducting ward congresses by two court rulings. However, on Saturday, July 27, 2024, the PDP disobeyed the decrees and held congresses in multiple wards throughout the state.
A restraining order was granted against the PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the party’s national secretary, and National Chairman,
Iliya Umar Damagum, by a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt on Friday, July 26, 2024.

While a lawsuit filed by real party members from different wards in the state’s 23 local, government areas is being heard and decided,
the order forbids the party and its officials from conducting ward, local government, and state congresses in Rivers State.
Justice The restraining order was issued by Charles Wali, who also gave the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC),
the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) instructions on how to carry out the order.
A new hearing in the case was scheduled for August 1, 2024.
Concurrently, the PDP in Rivers State was instructed by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday to move on with organizing its state,
local government, and ward congresses.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the DSS, the Police, and seven other parties were prohibited by Justice Peter Lifu’s decision from preventing the congresses.
New executives to oversee PDP operations at different levels in Rivers will be chosen by the congresses Condition.
Before the Federal High Court made its decision, a Rivers State High Court had previously ruled against the PDP,
its national chairman, national financial secretary, and national organizing secretary being able to hold the party’s congress in Rivers State on July 27, 2024.
