Christmas: As Chicken Prices Soar

Date:

Nigerians choose beef Chicken is the protein that every family looks forward to this Christmas.

On Christmas Day, those who sell beef must follow the tradition without benefiting from it. Freezer stores are crowded with customers buying chicken parts, from knees to breasts to wings.

Christmas Day

People who sold live chickens were not excluded.

They could be seen preparing and eating chicken while a large crowd of customers waited for them.
Before Christmas, live chicken and turkey sellers were busy raising their chicks until they were big enough to eat.
However, due to the high price of frozen and live chicken, many people are switching from their usual consumption of chicken or turkey to beef meat this Christmas.
ECONOMY AND LIFESTYLE A visit to several markets yesterday revealed that the price of a live chicken, which was N5,000 last year, is now between N10,000 and N20,000, depending on the size.

The price of a turkey ranges from 40,000 Naira to 45,000 Naira, depending on the size.
One carton of medium chicken wings was sold for N30,000, and one carton of chicken orobo (large wrap) was sold for N37,000.
A carton of medium-sized chicken legs was sold for 33,000 naira.
But the price of a kilogram of beef was 3,300 Naira for him, whereas a few weeks ago it was 2,800 Naira for him.

Further investigation revealed that the price of a cow breast is N14,000; the price of a rooster is between N15,000 and N20,000; and laying hens are sold for between N8,000 and N10,000, depending on size.
Baker Aduke Olujimi said he expected an increase in both live and frozen chickens and resorted to cooking beef for protein this Christmas.
I predicted a scenario where the price of live and frozen chicken would increase. So I bought beef for 20,000 naira, which is a good amount compared to chicken for that price.

This is what I will be serving to my family and friends this Christmas. '' Bilikis Adeniran, a frozen food vendor, said:This is what I will be serving to my family and friends this Christmas.
Last year, my store was full of customers buying chicken of all sizes and parts. Chicken prices were much cheaper back then than they are now.
“As you can see, there are no customers, especially today.

” I hope there will be patronage tomorrow, but I doubt it since the patronage of Christmas itself is expected the day before Christmas.
Oluwatoyin Fasasi, a live chicken and turkey vendor, said the high price of chicken was due to the rising cost of feed.
Other maintenance charges.

“It is not our fault that chicken of different types is very expensive on the market.
The higher price of live chickens is due to increased feed and other maintenance costs. ''Unlike last year, when I raised 250 chickens to cover food and maintenance costs, I raised 100 chickens.
Due to the high price of chicken, the footfall is very low compared to last year. It’s not our fault.
But the demand for beef The high level also leads to an increase in prices.

Hakeem Moshood, who sells beef at Igando Market, said beef used to cost N2,500 per kilogram but now costs between N3,500 and N4,000.
which is alarming.
This shows that people don't care about trends and choose what they can afford. ''Last year, people flocked to poultry stores selling frozen and live food.
” This year, they chose cow meat (beef) because they had money to spare and enough to feed their visiting family and friends.
“Due to increased demand for beef, the price of a kilogram is now between N3,500 and N4,000, compared to N2,500 last week.
