Minimum wage: Tinubu declares, ‘We’ll pay what Nigeria can afford.’

Date:

The federal government will pay a minimum wage that it can afford, according to President Bola Tinubu.

In an address on the occasion of the country’s 25th anniversary of Democracy Day, Tinubu addressed a group of governors and members of the national assembly on Wednesday night at the State House.

In a speech to the country earlier on Wednesday, Tinubu stated that discussions about a new national minimum wage have been held between the federal government and organized labor ‘in good faith and with open arms.’

In order ‘to enshrine what has been agreed upon as part of our law for the next five years or less,’ the president added, an executive measure pertaining to the minimum wage would be sent to the national parliament.

The organized labor movement wanted N250,000, while the federal government recommended N62,000 as the new minimum wage.

In response to the president’s address, organized labor stated that the federal government and it have not achieved a minimum wage deal. Tinubu stated that the federal government will pay employees what it can afford while making a speech at the State House.

‘If I have changed my mind about the minimum wage, you will receive a notice from me, senators and deputy senators. What Nigeria can afford, what you can afford, and what I can afford is what we are going to do. If you have a size at all, they ask you to cut your coat accordingly,’ Tinubu remarked.

Additionally, Tinubu praised the governors, stating they are carrying out their best to raise the standard of living for individuals.

‘I sincerely appreciate all of you supporting me. I swear to you, I will succeed. Nigeria is a wonderful nation. We include the concept of service spirit into our national anthem. Many of the governors that I have witnessed serving their people in person and on television are present tonight, according to Tinubu.

Umo Eno of Akwa, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, Uba Sani of Kaduna, Sheriff Oborevwor of Delta, Alex Otti of Abia, and Ahmed Ododo of Kogi are the governors who Tinubu expressly mentioned.

‘I apologize if I missed you,’ the president said to the other governors in attendance.

”Everyone is embracing the Nigerian colors of green, white, and green and has forgotten the partisanship color. That’s the standard by which we cherish for ourselves. That is the baton, and the rationale behind our assertion that we pass on to our offspring and grandkids a flag free of stains.

‘Nigeria transcends each of us individually.’ Because of this, the nation’s unity cannot be exchanged.

The president went on to discuss national insecurity and how it has an impact on food production.

Tinubu emphasized that young people need to be taught the nation’s values so they will reject crime and violence and adopt a responsible lifestyle.

The president praised a few customs agents for turning down payments from individuals who seemed to be railroad track vandals.

‘Distinguished leaders, there is much work ahead of us regarding our county and its residents. A citizen is more than just a dictionary user meaning of it, it is our real character that we have to instill in them in order to get it,’ Tinubu stated.
