Kwankwaso vows to reduce APC's votes

Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso vow that he would significantly reduce the Kano vote in the 2027 elections has been dismissed as absurd by the Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso, who was the former governor of Kano, currently leads the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

In a statement released Thursday, Abdullahi Abbas, chairman of the Kano APC, urged Kwankwaso to end his “daydreaming” and focus on regaining his membership in the NNPP.

Abbas called Kwankwaso a “political refugee” clinging to Kano State and Governor Abba Yusuf for relevance.

Abbas reassured APC supporters that Kwankwaso’s departure from the NNPP should not concern them, attributing it to his ignorance and self-centeredness.

He added that Kwankwaso’s inability to align with their progressive values led to his exit from the APC, while his ego and controlling nature caused him to leave the PDP.

Now rejected by the NNPP, he finds himself a political fugitive.

Abbas also promised that the APC would prevent any recurrence of “vote manipulation and allocation” seen in the 2023 elections, which he claimed misrepresented the NNPP’s strength in Kano.

He stated that the APC is prepared to maintain control of Kano State and reduce Kwankwaso’s influence from his base on Miller Road.

Abbas’s comments followed Kwankwaso’s assertion that he had met with senior advisers and former council members from Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje’s administration at his home.

Kwankwaso touted the NNPP’s achievements in the 2023 elections, despite starting late as a new party.

He pointed out that the PDP only received 15,000 votes in Kano, stating, “Now it’s our turn to diminish the APC’s power.

Mr. Olukolade Kassim, Chairman of the Nigeria Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Lagos Branch, urged government authorities to collaborate with surveyors to tackle insecurity challenges. Kassim made this call during the association’s 90th anniversary and 39th Annual General Meeting in Ikeja, themed ‘Brain Drain and Development Growth:

Impact on the Surveying Profession in Nigeria.’ He emphasized, ‘Insecurity can be significantly reduced, as we have expertise in locational analysis.

It’s crucial to consult specialists when incidents occur at specific sites. With government collaboration, we can help mitigate insecurity challenges. A comprehensive mapping of Nigeria will be instrumental in this effort.’

He praised association members for their commitment to professional ethics and encouraged them to uphold the dedication shown by founders like Sir Herbert Macaulay.

‘While we celebrate 90 years of surveying and face challenges like poor working conditions, I am hopeful that we won’t remain at our lowest for long. We are actively working to improve our situation, and with divine favor, we will regain our former prominence,’ Kassim stated.

On brain drain, Kassim noted that cross-border knowledge and technology exchange have lessened their impact on Nigeria’s surveying profession. ‘The trend of ‘Japa’ is reciprocal. We learn from those who migrate, and they gain insights from us.

It’s an opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge from those abroad,’ he explained.

Dr. Matthew Ibitoye, NIS President, highlighted that brain drain affects more than just surveying, with economic hardships and insecurity as major drivers. ‘Opportunities abroad often lead families to relocate, creating a self-imposed bondage.

Our voluntary migration raises concerns for our future and that of our children. Every instance of brain drain in one location represents a gain for another,’ he asserted.

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company has successfully restored electricity to the Bekwarra Local Government Area in Cross River State after a prolonged period of 15 years without power. Residents expressed their gratitude to Senator Bassey Otu for fulfilling his campaign commitment to revive power supply following his election.

Innocent Inaku, the PHEDC branch manager for Cross River State’s North and Central regions, praised Governor Otu for this significant development, noting that the extended blackout was largely due to vandalism and aging infrastructure.

Inaku remarked, ‘Bekwarra has endured darkness for over a decade. The governor has directed the state rural electrification agency to implement a phased approach to reconnecting and rehabilitating the power network.’

Signor Omang, the traditional head of Ada Bekwarra, commended the governor as a pivotal leader. He underscored the significance of restoring power for enhancing the local economy and improving residents’ quality of life.

‘I commend the governor for addressing our concerns after I led a delegation to his office in April to remind him of his commitment. Our primary focus was electricity, alongside health facilities, water supply, and rural infrastructure.’
