More than 1,300 people perished during this year’s Hajj trip in Saudi Arabia due to exceptionally high temperatures at Islamic holy sites in the desert nation, Saudi authorities revealed on Sunday.

According to Saudi Health Minister Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel, 83% of the 1,301 deaths were caused by illegal pilgrims who trekked, long distances in sweltering heat to complete Hajj ceremonies in and around Mecca.

‘Speaking to state-owned television, the minister claimed 95 pilgrims were being treated at hospitals, with some of them being airlifted for treatment The capital is Riyadh.’ He stated that the ‘identification process was delayed because many of the deceased pilgrims lacked identification documents.’

More than 660 Egyptians died. According to two Cairo officials, all but 31 were unlicensed pilgrims. ‘Egypt has canceled the licenses of 16 travel businesses that assisted unlawful ‘pilgrims’ in traveling to Saudi Arabia, authorities said.’

The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to inform journalists, said the majority of the dead were found inside the Emergency Complex in Mecca’s Al-Muaisem district. Egypt dispatched around 50,000 permitted pilgrims to Saudi Arabia this year.

Saudi officials tightened down on unlicensed pilgrims, banishing tens of thousands of them. However, many others, primarily Egyptians, were able to reach holy locations in and around Mecca, some by foot. Unlike approved pilgrims, they had no hotels to retreat to to escape the blazing heat.

Egypt’s government stated on Saturday that the 16 travel agencies did not provide proper assistance to pilgrims. It claimed that these organizations illegally sponsored pilgrims’ trips to Saudi Arabia using permits that did not allow holders to visit Mecca.

The government also announced that officials from the companies had been sent to the public prosecutor for an inquiry.

According to the state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram, several travel firms and Hajj trip providers sold Egyptian Hajj hopefuls Saudi tourist visas, which violated Saudi requirements requiring pilgrims to have unique visas.

According to the publication, these firms left pilgrims in Mecca in limbo when the holy sites were burning hot.

According to the Associated Press, the dead included 165 Indonesian pilgrims, 98 Indian pilgrims, and scores more from Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, and Malaysia. Two American citizens were also reported killed.

‘The Associated Press could not independently confirm the causes of death, although some countries, like ‘Jordan and Tunisia,’ blamed the extreme heat.’

AP journalists witnessed pilgrims collapsing from the blazing heat, particularly on the second and third days of the Hajj. Some vomited and collapsed.

Historically, deaths have not been uncommon at the Hajj, which has witnessed More than 2 million people come to Saudi Arabia for a five-day pilgrimage.

The pilgrimage’s history has also included catastrophic stampedes and plagues. However, this year’s count was abnormally high, indicating unique conditions.

According to an AP count, a stampede in Mina killed around 2,400 pilgrims in 2015, making it the bloodiest incident in the pilgrimage’s history.

‘Saudi Arabia has never acknowledged the full scale of the catastrophe.’ A separate crane collapsed at Mecca’s Grand Mosque Earlier that year, 111 people were slain.

The second-deadliest occurrence at the Hajj was a 1990 stampede that killed 1,426 pilgrims.

During this year’s Hajj, daily maximum temperatures in Mecca and its hallowed sites hovered between 46 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit) and 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit),

according to the Saudi National Center for Meteorology. Some others fainted while attempting the symbolic stoning of the devil.

The Hajj is one of Islam’s five pillars and one of the world’s most important religious events. According to Saudi Hajj officials,

More than 1.83 million Muslims will do the Hajj in 2024, including over 1.6 million from 22 countries and around 222,000 Saudi nationals and residents.

Saudi Arabia has allocated billions of dollars on crowd management and security precautions for those proactively taking an active role in the annual five-day pilgrimage, but the sheer magnitude of people generates concerns and makes it difficult to ensure their safety.

Climate change may enhance the risk. According to a 2019 study undertaken by experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,

even if the world succeeds in avoiding the worst effects of climate change,

The Hajj will be held in temperatures above ‘extreme danger.’ threshold’ between 2047 and 2052, and 2079 and 2086.

Because Islam follows the lunar calendar, the Hajj occurs around 11 days earlier each year. By 2029, the Hajj will be held in April, and for the five years following that, it will be held during the winter, when temperature changes are milder.

Gunmen target synagogues and churches in the Russian Republic

Gunmen targeted synagogues and churches in two southern Russian cities on Sunday, killing several police officers and a priest in an apparent coordinated operation that highlighted Russia’s vulnerability to extreme violence.

Multiple law enforcement personnel and a priest were killed in Dagestan during what seemed to be coordinated attacks, according to local officials.

Officials claimed six of the shooters were killed in shootouts in the two cities of Makhachkala and Derbent in Dagestan, a largely Muslim province on the Caspian Sea.

According to officials and religious organizations, they attacked synagogues and churches in both locations, armed with guns and Molotov cocktails.

Sergei Melikov, the governor of Dagestan, described the terrorist assault as the latest attempt ‘on our brotherhood, on our ethnically diverse togetherness.’

The specific death toll was not immediately known. Mr. Melikov added that ‘ more than 15 law enforcement employees fell prey to today’s terrorist act,’ but did not specify what percentage of them had been killed or injured.

The gunmen’s intentions and identities were also unknown, and there was no claim of responsibility for the incident. Russia’s Investigative Committee, which functions similarly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced the launch of a terrorism probe.

The attack was the latest example of apparent extreme violence within Russia while the country pursued its war with neighboring Ukraine.

In an attack on a Moscow performance hall in March, four attackers killed 145 people, for which the Islamic State took responsibility. Last October, an antisemitic crowd attacked a plane arriving in Dagestan from Tel Aviv.

Gunmen target synagogues

The Russian Jewish Congress reported that the assailants in Derbent set fire to a synagogue after shooting and killing the police officers guarding it. They also killed a priest, Nikolai Kotelnikov, according to a Russian Orthodox Church spokeswoman.

The priest was the sole documented casualty of Sunday’s attack who was not a law enforcement officer, while Mr. Melikov stated that ‘several’ civilians had died.

According to state media sources, at the same time, early Sunday evening, assailants opened fire on a traffic police position in Makhachkala.

The terrorists also targeted Makhachkala’s Cathedral of the Assumption, according to the state According to the Russian Jewish Congress, there have been media reports and a synagogue.

Dagestan’s interior ministry released videos showing gunmen on the loose in the city of Makhachkala, shooting fire and ordering people out of their automobiles. Police said that roads leading out of the city were temporarily shut down.

It was unclear late Sunday whether any gunmen were at large, but Mr. Melikov said the ‘active phase’ of the police reaction had ended.

The violence underscored Russia’s long-standing ethnic and religious conflicts, notably in the country’s southern Caucasus region, which includes Dagestan.

Patriarch Kirill I, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, said it was ‘no coincidence’ that the incident occurred on the day Orthodox Christians celebrate Pentecost.

‘We see that the enemy is not giving up on attempts to destroy interreligious peace and harmony within our society,’ Kirill told reporters in a statement.

The identity of the enemy remained unknown.

The Kremlin did not comment, and the authorities provided scant information about the assailants’ names. Still, some state media stories suggested that some of the gunmen were the sons of a local official.

Following the March shooting at a Moscow concert hall, Russia’s deadliest terrorist assault in 20 years, Russian officials frequently asserted, without evidence, that Ukraine and the West were to blame, despite the Islamic State’s claim of responsibility.

On Sunday, some Russian leaders pointed a finger at the West without providing documentation. Leonid Slutsky Leonid Slutsky, a senior politician,

alleged that the attacks were carried out with ‘the aim of sowing panic and dividing the people of Russia’ and that ‘the blood of the victims’ was also in the hands of the US.

According to community officials, the attacks were the most recent instance to upset Russia’s Jewish community, which has suffered increased threats since the start of the conflict in Gaza.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it was in contact with Jewish community leaders in Dagestan and that no injuries had been reported.

Emir Sanusi sacking is verified by an official court document.

Emir Sanusi sacking

The removal of Kano Emir Sanusi has been officially confirmed through the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Federal High Court’s ruling, signed by the registrar’s office,

indicating that Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi has been removed from his position.

The two sides have been declaring triumph since Justice Muhammadu Liman’s ruling on Thursday, but according to a copy of the CTC that was provided to reporters in Abuja, the court invalidated Emir Sanusi’s reinstatement.

There has been a dispute with the House of Assembly’s revision to the Emirates law in Kano for approximately a month now.

This has impacted the installation of Emir Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano by the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, following the removal of Sanusi from office as Kano’s emir.

The court ruled that the previous injunction instructing the parties to preserve the status quo is still in effect.

Alhaji Aminu Babba Dangundi, the plaintiff, had sued the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Department of State Services, the Kano State government,

The Speaker of the Kano State Assembly, the Attorney General of Kano State, the Commissioner of Police, and the Inspector General of Police in suit number FHC/KN/CS/ 1382/2024.

In defiance of the directive from ‘this Honourable Court,’ the plaintiff requested for an order declaring the actions of the second and third defendants in enacting the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, 2024 to be void.

Additionally, he asked the court to issue an order voiding the 23rd Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, 2024’s provisions,

Which allowed the 1st and 4th defendants to appoint Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusl as the 16th Emir of Kano, in violation of the May 23, 22024,court order.

‘That every step taken by the defendants in pursuance of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) LAW, 2024,

Are hereby annulled and set aside;’ declared Justice Lima following his hearing from the attorneys involved in the case.

Nevertheless, the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) LAW, 2024, which is the focus of the substantive lawsuit, remains lawful notwithstanding this judgment.

‘That the previous directive parties to uphold the status quo,’ the ante is still in place.

Police justification for disobeying the government’s order

AIG Usaini Gumel, the state commissioner of police for Kano, has provided justifications for defying Governor Yusuf’s order to remove Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th emir of Kano, from his tiny castle in Nassarawa.

Governor Yusuf gave the CP instructions on Thursday night to take Bayero out of the Nassarawa tiny palace where he is now living through the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi.

In a Friday interview in Kano, the commissioner of police stated that complying with the governor’s order of removal would be equivalent to ‘jumping the gun.’

He said that the State High Court had received a complaint from the same government that issued the directive regarding the eviction judgment that is scheduled on Monday, June 24, 2024.

Because the government has filed a case at the State High Court against the eviction order, which is scheduled to be heard on Monday, June 24, 2024, the police will not be evicting Bayero.

‘The government is acting prematurely as they have already filed a case over the eviction order, which is scheduled for June 24, 2024.

Because we don’t know what will happen in court, if we follow the order, it will be as though we are preempting the court, he said.

Meanwhile, Aminu Ado Bayero’s current residence, the Nassarawa tiny palace, has increased protection.

According to our reporter, who went to the mini palace just prior to the Juma’at prayer, there were rumors that additional security guards had been sent there in addition to those on the ground.

As the police had not yet removed Bayero as instructed by Governor Yusuf,

it was noted that all four major approaches leading to the tiny palace had been blocked off by security personnel.

Our correspondent was informed by one of Bayero’s followers, who wished to remain anonymous,

that Bayero was still in the small palace getting ‘traditional greetings’ from some of the traditional rulers who were devoted to him.

As I speak with you, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero is still in the miniature palace and is getting the ‘traditional greetings’ from those devoted to him, according to the source.

He refuted the reports circulating in some circles that the palace had a bulldozer positioned there in preparation for its demolition.

‘I’ve heard rumors that a bulldozer has been positioned near the Nassarawa small palace in preparation for its demolition in some places.

The insider continued, ‘This is propaganda from social media.

Why Gov. Alia will receive a stress-free second term – Gemade (2nd)

Senator Barnabas Gemade, a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),

Said that Benue state governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia would win a second term in 2027 ‘without much stress.’

Speaking to APC supporters in Vandeikya, Gemade based his confidence on Alia’s accomplishments.

At the moment, the governor is on a ‘Thank you’ tour of the municipal governments of Konshisha and Vandiekya.

Gemade stated that the administration of Alia had done a great job over the past year and that the Jechira people, in particular, as well as the Benue people in general, were firmly in support of it.

‘Aper Aku, who was ranked first previously, is competing with Alia, whose scorecard is better than any governor in Benue,’ he stated.

Gov. Alia bemoaned the state’s lack of development in his speech, claiming that previous governments had failed to advance it.

He said that the state’s dramatic change was divinely ordained and meant to bring back the once-gloryful state.

‘Benue was transported back 40 years ago, a long time ago. Great heroes intervened while continuing to do their pieces and release the individuals.

God wants you to work with a select group of governors who have shown a deep love for both their state and humanity, and this is one of the reasons for it.

‘In order to ensure that our children grow up to be extremely successful and forward-thinking, we need to restore development and put them back on the pedestal that belongs in the classroom.

‘The work we have completed in the past year to renovate schools, hospitals, build roads, and provide electricity, among many other things, is just the tip of the iceberg,’ he remarked.

For ‘his laudable initiatives aimed at putting the country back on the fast lane of development,’ President Bola Tinubu received praise from Alia.

He claimed that these aspirational initiatives were aimed toward:

‘He said that these grandiose initiatives also aimed to better the lives of the hordes of young people without jobs, enabling them to become employers of labor and economically viable. (NANO)
